The Pillow Book — Four Seasons: Autumn at Dusk

This work is inspired by The Pillow Book, a classical Japanese essay written by Sei Shōnagon, a female writer of the Heian period. It draws from the well-known passage, “Autumn is at dusk.” A quiet field stretches across the foreground, with distant mountains resting softly on the horizon. By keeping the composition spare, the painting directs attention to the atmosphere of early evening. The sun is half-hidden behind the mountains, and the sky glows in gentle shades of orange, marking the boundary between day and night. Silhouettes of crows crossing the sky add a subtle sense of motion, enhancing the quiet melancholy unique to an autumn dusk. Through restrained color and simple forms, this work captures the fleeting moment as light gently fades away. 本作は、平安時代の女流作家・清少納言が著した随筆『枕草子』に描かれる四季の情景をもとに制作した作品です。 「秋は夕暮れ」という一節に着想を得ています。 手前には広がる野原、遠くには静かに連なる山々を配し、余計な要素を省いた構成によって、夕暮れ時の空気に意識が向かうよう表現しています。 太陽は山の向こうに半分隠れ、空はやわらかなオレンジ色に染まり、昼と夜の境目を静かに告げます。 空を横切るカラスの姿が、静けさの中にほのかな動きを添え、秋の夕暮れ特有の寂しさと余韻を際立たせます。 色と光が次第に失われていく一瞬を、簡潔な形と抑えた表現によって描いた一枚です。
